"Tuccia" (2026) Print
The story of the Vestal Virgin stopped me in my tracks. Tuccia, the Vestal Virgin, takes place in ancient Rome. Tuccia was a priestess devoted to Vesta, the Roman goddess of hearth, home, and sacred flame. The Vesta Virgins were known to be held in the highest regards of purity and were responsible for keeping Vesta's eternal flame burning. Their role was considered one of the most sacred duties in Rome.
According to legend, Tuccia was falsely accused of breaking her vow of chastity. The punishment for this violation was to be buried alive. To prove her innocence, Tuccia called upon the goddess Vesta for help. Her task was seemingly impossible, carry water in a shallow vessel without spilling a single drop.
She walked to the Tiber river, filled her vessel with water, and carried it all the way back safely. This insane miracle proved her purity and devotion.
There are many depictions of this story, but Tuccia is always shown carrying a sieve or stainer filled with water, representing the impossible task that was completed. The miracle became a symbol of divine protection, faith, and triumph of the truth over false accusations.
While reading this story, I couldn't help but become ignited with so many emotions. Rage towards another woman being falsely accused of something she did not do. Frustration over an impossible task designed for her to fail. Relief that she was sparred, and gratitude that it was a story of justice heard for centuries. I simply cannot image someone accusing me of breaking my sacred vow and be sentenced to being buried alive. In modern terms, imagine someone saying you cheated and you instantly get death row! Mind blowing! This story moved me, and I couldn't wait to represent Tuccia in a sacred light, the way she deserves.
